I’m currently sitting in my “nest” (favourite spot on the couch + blankets + pillows + laptop) sipping on some super strong french press coffee. I probably should have pressed down the grounds 20 minutes ago. Ooops. Since I consumed all the Baileys in my stockpile last night, it’s a black coffee kind of morning.
I’m unapologetically rolling out the new year with more butter, sugar, cake, bacon, cocktails, and all the other decadent treats you’ve come to expect from My Dish is Bomb. I’m not a fan of the “overindulge–>deprive yourself–>overindulge” philosophy as I appreciate a little decadence every single day, and it’s commonly known that a whiskey a day keeps the doctor away. Obviously.
Keeping with the whiskey theme as of late, this new MDB Cocktail is bourbon-based. Bourbon, if you’re not familiar, is a type of whiskey made from corn (as opposed to rye whiskey and scotch whiskey). Bourbon is a “distinctive product of the United States” with most of it being produced in Kentucky.
A cocktail shaker is important for this fruity bourbon smash as it really helps amalgamate the ingredients and thin out the jam. If you don’t have one, they run pretty cheap (about $10 CAD).
I’d enjoy this cocktail any time of the year, but with the raspberry jam and the ginger-ale it definitely has winter tones. Winter is when you’re supposed to start using all the jam you’ve canned for the summer, right? I would not know, as I am not one who cans. Maybe I’m 50 years off in this assumption, but I like to think there are a few people who still can.
This recipe yields one cocktail, so double/triple/quadruple as needed. I like to make one at a time in the cocktail shaker to ensure each glass has the same amount of ingredients, but if you’re not a super perfectionist like me, go ahead and throw it all in. This fruity bourbon smash is slightly sweet, sour and full of bourbon goodness. Enjoy 🙂
- 1 1/2 fl. oz. bourbon whiskey
- 1 tsp raspberry jam
- 1 fl. oz. orange juice
- squeeze of a lemon wedge
- one can ginger ale (will be enough for 4 drinks)
- In a cocktail shaker, add a few ice cubes, the bourbon, raspberry jam, orange juice, and a squeeze of a lemon wedge. Shake 6-7 times or until well combined. Pour into a short rocks glass and top with ginger ale.
